The Port of San Diego has chosen Skychargers LLC to develop and manage a pioneering zero-emission truck stop in National City, aimed at supporting the port’s transition to zero-emission technology by 2030. This initiative aligns with the Port’s ambitious Maritime Clean Air Strategy, which includes a commitment to transition all heavy-duty trucks entering and exiting its cargo terminals to zero emissions within the next decade. The proposed site, spanning 5 acres at 19th Street and Tidelands Avenue, is planned to feature 35 dual-port electric vehicle chargers, enabling the simultaneous charging of 70 trucks. In addition, the project will introduce a cashier-less Just Walk Out store by Amazon, offering a seamless shopping experience, and a restroom facility for truck drivers.
Skychargers plans to power the facility with a significant solar array and a battery storage system, indicating a strong commitment to renewable energy sources. The developer is seeking a minimum of a 20-year lease agreement, with an initial rent of $1.05 million and an annual increase of 2 percent, alongside a $150,000 investment in community benefits, including contributions to National City’s free ride-share service and job creation.
The selection process saw Skychargers chosen over another finalist, Gage Zero LLC, due to its more extensive proposal that aligns closely with the Port’s zero-emission goals. However, negotiations for the lease will need to address concerns from National City officials, including fire risks associated with lithium-ion batteries and ensuring the community benefits from this development.
