The Port of New York and New Jersey has started 2024 with impressive growth, reporting a notable increase in container volume and a significant boost in auto numbers for January. The port handled 667,346 Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (TEUs), marking a 3.4% increase from the previous year, and moved 35,302 autos through the port, a 22.1% increase compared to January 2023.
Earning the title of the second busiest port in the country for loaded imports and exports in January 2024, the port managed 447,514 loaded TEUs, reflecting a 2.6% rise from January 2023. Import container volumes rose by 5.8% in January 2024 compared to the previous year, showcasing the port’s growing significance as a gateway for global trade. Despite a 6.7% decrease in exports compared to January 2023, the port still saw a modest increase in export empties.
However, the port did experience a minor decrease in rail volume, with a total of 53,013 containers, a 1.3% drop from the previous year. Nonetheless, the port concluded 2023 with container volume totals surpassing pre-COVID numbers from 2019 by 4.4%, demonstrating resilience and growth in the face of global supply chain challenges.
The beginning of 2024 has seen U.S. container import volumes off to a strong start, with the top U.S. ports handling 1.96 million TEU in January, an 8.6% increase year over year. This growth is attributed to efforts by U.S. retailers to mitigate the impact of delays and increased costs in the supply chain, despite ongoing disruptions such as Houthi attacks on shipping in the Red Sea.
