Officials have provided an update on the progress of establishing a new multi-million-dollar inland port facility in Montgomery, Alabama. Announced in 2022 by the Alabama Port Authority, the “Montgomery Express” is envisioned through newly released renderings, showcasing its future appearance. This facility will serve as an extension of the port authority’s container intermodal terminal at the Port of Mobile, facilitating the efficient transfer of imported containers from ships to rail within a 12-hour window for transit to Montgomery within a day.
The facility, located just west of Interstate 65, aims to bolster the Montgomery region’s retail, distribution, agribusiness, and manufacturing sectors. It specifically targets core customers like automotive parts manufacturers, including Hyundai, by streamlining the supply chain for components necessary for vehicle production. The strategic location, less than a mile from Hyundai, promises significant efficiency improvements and reduced interstate truck traffic, potentially removing about 250 trucks per unit train from the roads.
Since its announcement, the development has spurred over $2.2 billion in investments around the facility, including warehousing, distribution, and manufacturing, highlighting its far-reaching economic impact. Property assessments have commenced, and the project awaits approval from the Federal Railroad Administration to progress further. With hopes to initiate service within the next two years, the $84 million project is funded by federal and state resources, marking a significant investment in Alabama’s transportation and economic infrastructure.
