COSCO Shipping, a major Chinese state-owned shipping and logistics services supplier company, has unveiled the “Green Water 01,” proclaimed as the world’s largest river-to-sea fully electric container ship. This innovative vessel, weighing over 10,000 tons and equipped with over 50,000 kWh in battery capacity, represents a significant advancement in sustainable maritime logistics. It has commenced operations within China, primarily running routes between Shanghai and Nanjing.
The “Green Water 01” is a testament to COSCO’s commitment to green technology and its role in reshaping the global shipping industry. The ship measures 119.8 meters in length, 23.6 meters in width, and features a maximum speed of 12 mph, making it a pioneering model in terms of size, capacity, and environmental impact. Its design allows for the addition of extra battery modules, enhancing its range as necessary for longer voyages. This capacity for customization in energy usage enables the vessel to complete trips that consume up to 80,000 kWh, equivalent to saving approximately 15 tons of fuel compared to a traditional container ship.
This initiative not only sets new standards in the shipping industry but also significantly cuts down on carbon emissions, with the vessel saving around 3,900 kg of fuel every 100 nautical miles and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 12.4 tons. COSCO’s introduction of the “Green Water 01” into their fleet is a critical step towards achieving greater sustainability in maritime operations, as it continues to provide a regular service between major Chinese cities.
