Southern California Edison (SCE) is driving the future of sustainable transportation through its Charge Ready Transport Program, which significantly supports fleet electrification for medium- and heavy-duty vehicles. In collaboration with NFI, one of North America’s leading logistics providers, SCE has facilitated the launch of a new electric charging depot in Ontario, California. This facility is equipped with 38 DC fast chargers, designed to power a fleet of 50 battery-electric trucks used in drayage operations between the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach and an inland warehouse.
The deployment of these electric trucks, comprising 30 Freightliner eCascadias and 20 Volvo VNR Electrics, is a pivotal step in reducing emissions and enhancing air quality in freight-heavy corridors. This initiative is backed by significant funding from the California Air Resources Board (CARB) and other regional agencies, emphasizing the collaborative effort to transition to zero-emission vehicles in the logistics sector.
SCE’s program not only offers infrastructure setup at low or no cost but also provides comprehensive support to businesses transitioning to electric fleets. This includes logistical and construction assistance, underlining SCE’s commitment as a key partner in commercial electrification. The operational success of these electric drayage trucks, capable of making two port trips daily on a single charge, underscores the potential for larger-scale transformations in freight transportation, aligning with broader environmental goals for cleaner air and reduced greenhouse gas emissions.
